BeekmanHebrew School-Program Outline

School Philosophy:  Our school philosophy is that it is crucial for Jewish children to have a positive first experience in Hebrew School. We make use of a variety of creative techniques to create a warm and exciting atmosphere in the classroom. These include hands-on workshops, crafts, exciting visual aids, songs and stories incorporated into every lesson. While the tone is kept light and fun, a wholesome, well-rounded Jewish curriculum educates students in the following subjects:

1. Hebrew Reading 2. Jewish Tradition 3. History of the Jewish People 4.  Jewish Holidays.

 Curriculum:

Hebrew Reading : For children in first grade on up, Beekman Hebrew makes use of the Aleph Champ program, an innovative educational module where study of the Hebrew letters is broken down into levels, and students ascend in rank as they master the Aleph Bet. Based loosely on the Karate level-system with multi-colored belts, students are offered exciting incentives for learning to recognize and read the Hebrew Alphabet. For younger classes, the focus is on letter recognition and vocabulary, gradually incorporating vowels and eventually reading basic two and three letter words.

Jewish Tradition: The Jewish People have been charged with the mission to “Be a Light unto the Nations.” At Beekman Hebrew, every effort is made to inspire students with this mandate by focusing on the Jewish value system as set forth in the Torah, and instilling a strong sense of ethics. Children are made aware of the biblical source for Jewish values and for many of society’s moral standards. This course covers values such as Charity, Respect for Nature and the Animal Kingdom, Compassion, Kindness, Respect for Parents and Elders, Self Respect, Communal Responsibility and more.  Jewish practices such as Kosher, Shabbat, Mezuzah, Prayer and the Jewish Calendar will also be examined in depth, in a special course entitled "My Jewish Home."

History of the Jewish People: Throughout the year the children learn Jewish History to give them a sense of their Jewish roots. Students can expect to cover from Genesis until the Giving of the Torah. "My Jewish History Scrapbook" is a year-long project in which the stories of each history lesson are recorded in the students' very own history book.

Jewish Holidays: As each holiday of the Jewish calendar approaches, excitement builds at Beekman Hebrew School as we learn about about the history, customs and meaning of the holiday. Our curriculum covers Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Simchat Torah, Chanukah, Tu Bishvat, Purim, Pesach, Lag B'omer, and Shavuot, with level-appropriate activities.
